A Message From The Chair

Hunting seasons are either in full swing or have wrapped up, the leaves are falling and
so is the temperature. Here on the Coast there are still plenty of fishing opportunities.
Wherever you are, hopefully you are taking full advantage of all that Fall has to offer!

My name is Steve Nikirk and I’ve recently taken on the Chair position for the BC chapter.
I’ve been involved with the organization for the past seven years. I started by building up
our Region One team on Vancouver Island and then, recently, helping the provincial
team as Co-Chair. Our leadership team, comprised of members from across the
province, meets once a month online to discuss wildlife and habitat issues. Together we
focus on three main tasks.

The first is advocacy. Our team is constantly engaging with all branches of government
to try to move the needle in a positive direction for fish, wildlife, and habitat.

Our second focus is our boots on the ground efforts. Here is where we get our hands
dirty and engage our membership to get involved with local conservation projects. This
includes things like backcountry garbage cleanups, stream restoration, invasive species
removal, etc., etc.

Lastly, the third goal is education. We do this by hosting in-person events and field days
with guest speakers who are subject matter experts sharing their knowledge and skills.
We also utilize our social media accounts to engage with the broader public.

BC BHA has come a long way over the years, and, to date, all of the amazing things we
have been able to do have been 100% volunteer driven. This isn’t going to change
anytime soon. The strength of BHA has always been found within the strength of its
membership. Hopefully you’ve renewed your membership and are bringing others into
the fold.

If you’re looking to get more involved at the regional or provincial level, we are always
looking for passionate individuals. You don’t have to be a Kuiu Cowboy, Sitka Slayer, or
Firstlite Phenom, you just have to care.

I wish you the best this season and hope you find success in whatever your goals may
be, whether it’s adventure, solace, quality time with friends and family, or all of the
above. Time in nature is the best medicine and I always benefit from a healthy dose of
vitamin tree.

Happy Trails!
